1. What is the “big idea” in plain English?
The project asks whether the formal operations that Lacan attributed to the unconscious — condensation, displacement, overdetermination, retroactive meaning-making — can be observed and measured in transformer language models. The claim is not that psychoanalysis and machine learning are the same field, or that they illuminate the same questions. 2. Is this saying AI is conscious or “alive”?
No. The framework does not require consciousness, emotion, desire, or personhood in the machine. 7. Why Lacan? Why not start from Freud directly, or from cognitive science?
